happy happy happy halloween

I tagged along with our Philadelphia niece and nephews tonight as they trick or treated on Delancey Street. I didn’t photograph a ghost this year, but just like last year, it was a mosh pit of little creatures – sharks and tigers and Dorothys from the Wizard of Oz. Some of the residents really go all out with dry-ice fog, scary sculptures, and elaborate costumes. All of it combined with the cobblestone street and the cold air and the smell of a fire burning in a fireplace somewhere nearby is just spooky delicious! And the candy! It’s the good stuff. No off-brand taffy that you can’t trade for anything. I love it! Halloween is one of my favs!

Shout out to a certain fairy princess and Thor (with accidental glitter hair instead of silver) in Kentucky. Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween!

blog nesting

Guess what? It’s a new banner! Yay! I was getting tired of the old one and decided it was time for a change. I’ve also been doing a little blog nesting. I stumbled across the lovely blog My Hands Made It, which uses the same WordPress theme as I do (Pilcrow), and I really like the width of her columns, among other things. So, what’s a girl to do? Learn CSS (you know, Cascading Style Sheets, duh?!) so she can customize her blog a bit. That’s what. And that’s what I’ve been working on the last few days.

I was feeling a little daunted by the whole thing and not really getting anywhere until I posted about it on Facebook. One of my classmates from graduate school now teaches multimedia at our alma mater and she sent some very helpful tutorials my way. Now I feel like I’m on track. It’s fun to learn a new skill! And, shout out to FB for getting me the help that I needed. Love it when that happens.

I’m still tinkering on the back end of the blog to correct the little issues that arose when I changed the width of the columns (ahem, now the header spacing is all bunged and the line underneath only goes halfway across the page), but I’ll figure it out. When I do, it will feel like a whole new world over here. I can’t wait!

i miss calligraphy

(Try to disregard those gorgeous shoes.)

I can’t remember the last time I picked up a pen and dipped the nib in ink. I miss it, and as my due date gets closer and closer, I’m keenly aware that it will be that much longer before I’m able to do so. I emailed a local calligrapher about lessons or classes, but she nudged me toward Italic or Gothic calligraphy classes. I’m not at all interested in that. Spencerian or Copperplate or some modern calligraphy style is what I want to practice.

I had almost given up when I found this online course at i still love calligraphy. I really want to take it. It’s a month-long course, so I need to get on it if I’m going to. I’ve been mulling it over for a week and a half. It feels so indulgent…Should I just do it? I should just do it, right?

clam loves garland

Our wonderful D.C. friends helped us celebrate Clam with a shower last weekend, and it was the most fun! Our awesome, creative, and lovely-in-every-way artist friend Karen crafted the sweetest decorations for the shower, including this clam garland (which I carefully untacked and brought home with me for Clam’s nursery).

Karen also painted that fab painting in the photo and gave us the gift of a commissioned painting for Clam’s room. Love it!

We have good and true friends in the District, and it’s really the only thing we miss about living there. I’m on a one-woman mission to convince every one of them to move to Philly, pronto! It might take a while.

Thank you all for a beautiful shower. We love and miss you!
